At 23, Jacob is the “pup” of the AOL team. He is also one of our sponsor students and currently he is completing a Bachelor Degree in Economics.
Originally from North-Western Kenya, Jacob decided to move to Nairobi after the death of his mother and father. He was 15 and while leaving his younger brother and sister was hard, Jacob thought this was his best chance to complete his education and look after his family.
Arriving in Kibera Slum, Jacob visited one of the well-recognised Primary Schools in the area. Originally refused entry, he pretended to be a relative of the Head Master with an important message for her.
Jacob begged the Head Master for a scholarship, promising to be the top ranking student at the end of the year. The Head Master was impressed by his ingenuity in getting an interview and true to his word, Jacob graduated primary school at the top of the class, resulting in further sponsorship through the 4 years of Secondary School.
After school, Adventure Out Loud met Jacob volunteering at our partner charity, The Mirror of Hope. We were so impressed with his story and determination that we found a group of sponsors to create a university fund that would allow Jacob to continue his dream.
When he is not busy at university, Jacob is an invaluable member of our East African team where he is best know for his mischievous sense of humour, wide-grinning smile and hyena cackling laugh.
